Health Benefits of Medicinal Cannabis

To date, there are more than 60 health organizations located in the U.S. and other countries which support the use of medicinal cannabis. These organizations include Health Canada and the American Public Health Association.

However, the use of medicinal cannabis is not recommended without a physician’s supervision. More experts are acknowledging the benefits of medicinal cannabis, and here are just a few benefits found from its use.

Pain Treatment

The active components found in medicinal cannabis have been found helpful in treating pain.

The cannabinoids of the cannabis plant have been found to significantly impact the body’s endocannabinoid receptor activity and interact with the brain’s neurotransmitters. Their action results in reduced inflammation and subsequent pain relief.

Findings from a number of studies showed that THC and CBD helped individuals plagued with pain caused by the condition known as multiple sclerosis. Some countries have an oral spray called Sativex that contains THC and CBD. This spray is often used by sufferers of multiple sclerosis.

A small study of 47 multiple sclerosis sufferers used Sativex as part of their treatment regimen. At the end of a one-month period, the study participants reported reduced levels of pain. They also experienced an improvement in their ability to walk and great relief from muscle spasms.

Patients diagnosed with arthritis pain have also benefited from using medicinal cannabis. In a separate study, the same oral spray was found to help reduce pain and improve sleep quality among study participants diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.

Anxiety and Depression

CBD oil has been used by many as a natural treatment for anxiety and depression. In one study, participants who had issues with social anxiety were asked to take 600 mg of CBD.

The other group was only given a placebo. Results showed that those who were provided CBD experienced fewer anxiety symptoms, compared to the group who only had the placebo.

Another study showed that patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, and patients with insomnia, found CBD oil to be helpful in reducing the incidence and intensity of symptoms.

Experts say these benefits are due to the ability of cannabinoids to influence the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating a person’s mood and behavior.

Vomiting and Nausea

According to the findings of a study published in the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, cannabinoids can be used as an effective treatment to help stop vomiting and nausea. Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are prone to experiencing nausea and vomiting. However, with oral administration of cannabinoids, these symptoms may be lessened.

Heart Health

In a small study, 10 male participants were given 600 mg of CBD oil. The results showed that it helped reduce their blood pressure. Those who had CBD oil showed lower blood pressure readings than those who just had a placebo.

The same group of participants was also asked to undergo a stress test. This type of test usually causes an increase in blood pressure. Those who took CBD oil experienced a smaller increase in their blood pressure, compared to the placebo group.

Researchers concluded that the active components of CBD were responsible for lowering stress levels and reducing blood pressure levels.

These benefits show a lowered risk of stroke, heart, and cardiovascular disease with CBD oil use.

Epileptic Seizures

In June 2018, America’s FDA or Food and Drug Administration finally declared its approval of medicinal products that contain CBD for treating two specific types of epilepsy. These two types of epilepsy are Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that using CBD oil greatly reduced the number of seizures among children affected by Dravet Syndrome. This condition is characterized by seizures that are not just frequent and prolonged but can be fatal.

It’s an unfortunate fact that most of those who have the disease can expect a short life expectancy, with most living only to their early 20’s. In the study, the children who were given CBD were able to reduce the number of seizures from 12 to only 6 per month.

These conditions have been found to be resistant to other types of treatment. However, with the FDA’s approval, the drug known as Epidiolex can now be used by sufferers of these diseases without breaching legalities.
